A brief history of the New York Rangers
Did you know that the New York Rangers aren’t the first team to use Madison Square Garden as their home ice?
It’s true! Before the Rangers played at Madison Square Garden, the New York Americans played in their place.
Tex Rickard, the owner of Madison Square Garden, bought the New York Rangers in 1926, and he allowed them to play their home games there.
During this season, the Rangers officially become one of the original 6 teams of the NHL- and the media often referred to the Rangers as “Tex’s Rangers.”
Right after buying the Rangers, Rickard hired Conn Smythe to start picking out the best players. Smythe now has a trophy named after him in the NHL.
Major honors and trophies
The New York Rangers are a unique NHL team, as they experienced success right from the very beginning.
They made the playoffs in 15 of their first 16 seasons, and they also became the first expansion team in history to win the Stanley Cup in its first 2 years of existence.
This happened during the 1927-1928 season, winning 3-2 over the Montreal Maroons.
The Rangers also won Stanley Cups in the 1932-1933, 1939-1940 and 1993-1994 seasons.
Most famous New York Rangers
The most famous players for the Rangers throughout the years!

The unique thing about Mark Messier’s career is its longevity.
Messier played in the NHL for 27 years, 10 of them with the Rangers.
He played for the New York Rangers in 1991-1992 up until 1996-1997, before playing for Vancouver, and then he also played his final years with the Rangers from 2000-2001 up until the 2003-2004 season, when he retired.
He also played 12 years with the Edmonton Oilers and 3 years with the Vancouver Canucks.
Over Messier’s 27 years, he made 15 all-star games. He also won 6 Stanley Cups, including one with the New York Rangers during the 1993-1994 season.
Jarmomir Jagr
Like Mark Messier, Jarmomir Jagr also enjoyed a long and successful career.
However, unfortunately for Rangers fans, Jagr was only in New York for 4 years.
He spent about half of his career (11 of his 24 years) with the Pittsburgh Penguins and he also played for Washington, Florida, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, Dallas and Calgary.
During his career, Jagr won 2 Stanley Cups. He also won the Ross trophy 5 times, and he was an 8-time all-star.
He won the Hart Trophy during the 1998-1999 season, and he was a 3-time Pearson award winner, winning the 2015-2016 Masterson award, too.
Rod Gilbert
Unlike the other 2 players on this list, Rod Gilbert played with the New York Rangers for his whole career.
During these 18 years, he made the all-star game twice and he won the Masterson award during the 1975-1976 season.
Gilbert’s highest scoring season was 1971-1972, when he scored 43 goals.
Henrik Lundqvist
Henrik Lundqvist was also a lifelong Ranger.
He was the team’s goaltender from 2005-2006 up until the 2019-2020 season, when he retired.
He made the 2005-2006 All Rookie team, and he was a 2-time all-star. He also won the 2011-2012 Vezina trophy.
Lundqvuist was in the top 10 in wins 10 times, including the 2012-2013 season, when he had 24.
Mike Richter
Mike Richter spent his entire 14 year goaltending career with the New York Rangers.
He led the Rangers to the Stanley Cup as part of the 1994 team. He also led the league in wins with 42 during the 1993-1994 season.
Why do the New York Rangers play in blue and red?
When the Rangers first came onto the scene, Tex Rickard wanted their uniforms to stand out, compared to the New York Americans.
The Americans played in red, white and blue uniforms, with their name stitched horizontally across the jersey.
Rickard chose a blue, white and red uniform for the Rangers, with the team name added diagonally across the front of the jersey.
Throughout their long history, these colors have only changed a little, with the modern uniforms using slightly different shades of those original colors.
